There are many different styles of dance and costuming,
each with its own flavor. Over many centuries, these dances have been
handed down in the countries of their origin. Each generation adding
there own interpretation and special flair to the dance.
I teach from an artistic viewpoint and do not encourage
strict choreography except in troupe presentations. My goal is to teach
form and musicality so you can dance from your soul by exploring the
emotional range of the music with mind and body. Your dance is a journey
of self-expression that comes from within.
One of the most important reasons to belly dance is the fun and freedom
of self-expression. In the Middle East, women and men of all ages enjoy the
many benefits of this art form. Stress relief, improved self image,
connection with the past, escape from mundane routines, added spice,
new friends and having fun while exercising are all benefits of MEDance.
European and Western views of Eastern cultures have long been seen
through a puritan filter, and MEDance is no exception. However, I
witness year after year the enriching effect MEDance has on my life
and everyone I know associated with it. I encourage everyone to give
this dance form a try before dissmissing its validity as an art form,
or settling for any stereotype.
Your reasons for engaging in the dance are as individual
as you are and will likely evolve and change over time as you grow.
So whether you are coming from an spiritual dance perspective or charting
a path to the glitz of the Cairo cabaret stage, finding the right instructor
for your needs is key to your enjoyment. If you have the luxury of having
many local teachers from which to choose as we have in the SF Bay Area,
I recommend what several of my students have done. Take 1 or 2 classes
from each instructor before deciding. Don't give up on MEDance if the
first teacher you try doesn't suit your taste. There are many dance
styles and teaching philosophies out there. Find one that's right for
you.
One word of caution...
Teachers of all kinds can have a profound impact
on our lives, both positive and negative. As in any field, unfortunately,
there are a few instructors that can make dance an unpleasant experience
by belittling students in front of others, or invalidating a student's
right to artistic expression. Such instructors often promote their methodology
as the only true or authentic path and discourage students from broadening
their experience by studying with other professionals. Should you encounter
such an individual, please do not let it reflect on the credibility
of the dance, or prevent you from reveling in and expressing the innate
beauty and artistry you possess. Dance from your heart.
