Kenneth Nolan, THIS

Charged with three yards of silk, 20 dye bottles and the instructions to make a veil for a veil swap, I drew inspriation from my long time love affair with Abstract Minimalism. The Kenneth Nolan painting above titled, THIS, inspired this eye-popping veil that commands the stage wherever it goes.

I hadn't seen the painting in nearly 20 years and was startled by how it had emblazoned it's colors in my mind. The end result proved too captivating to toss in a veil swap, so my friend created a costume to show it off.

This veil represents the intersection between art, life and friendship for me.

I dyed the veil below as a swatch test for newly mixed dye and drew on a favorite, Morris Lewis's, BETA LAMBDA.

It's a favorite practice veil for new students and I would one day like to make a thoughtful and brilliant homage to this fabulous painting.
